Back in Mississippi for Powers-Haymans Wedding

Image
Annie Powers is getting hitched to George Haymans this weekend. I will be back in the Great State of Mississippi this weekend for the nuptials of Greenwood native Annie Powers and her husband-to-be George Haymans. Why does this deserve a post on The Delta Dirt , you ask? Because The Dirt was looking a little bare and this gives me an excuse to post a pretty picture of Dunleith Plantation in Natchez, where the wedding will be held. That's why...

Wedding Crashers: Thomas and Malone

Image
Malone and Thomas Gregory give the "thumbs up" mid-crash. With all the free time I have between now and when school starts, I was trying to think of a funny post that would sum up my summer in the Delta. Then suddenly, like an epiphany from above, I remembered the wedding of Emeri Yelverton and Brad Sorrells in Memphis, Tenn. What makes this story funny is the fact that I am not childhood friends with either the bride or the groom. I am not even acquaintainces with them. In fact, I had never met them before the night of their wedding. And as best I can remember, I don't think I even met them that night. In short, I crashed their wedding (with the help of a few others). The whole night was so bizarre and so funny that it was literally like a scene from Wedding Crashers . It was as if we had said, "We're coming to your wedding...with or without invitations." I'll start from the beginning: I had planned on spending the weekend in Memphis with cousin ...

Water, Wine or Whiskey? A Wedding Season Decision...

Image
"What do you like better, Christmas or Wedding Season? The answer would be, um, Wedding Season? Bingo! I'm gonna get my suit. Now who are we this time?" - Jeremy Grey and John Beckwith from Wedding Crashers (2005) It's wedding season, kids! With that comes the horror of fitting into those terribly tight bridesmaid dresses or renting the infamous and infuriating groomsman tuxedo. But with the trepidation comes the relief that maybe, just maybe, the bride's family has scrimped and saved for an open-bar reception. You all know the drill: the wedding invitation arrives via the United States Postal Service, probably with three minutes worth of calligraphy endorsing the envelope. As soon as it is opened, the bridal guessing game begins. Is her family well-to-do? Is she an only daughter? Is she a Southern Baptist or is she a Whiskeypalian? Is the reception to be held in the church parlor or at a private establishment? All of the aforementioned factors (just to name a fe...

On Catching the Garter

At the weekend wedding of my college friends, Craft Tyler and Lauren Freeman, I supposedly sealed my fate in a moment that every bachelor fears. It was over before I knew what had happened, but at the end of the ceremonial act, I was holding the bride's garter. And while this action apparently confirms that I am the next to be married in my group of friends, I would like to discuss and hopefully disprove this age-old urban legend. A little background information: The wedding ritual dates to the 14th century, a time when women wore hose attached by a garter belt. Catching the garter (thrown by the groom) was a chance for the single men to share in the good fortune of the groom. Today, it is believed that the man who catches the garter will be the next to marry. My first inclination to believe that there is still hope for me yet comes with the realization of why I caught the damn thing in the first place. Was it because the fates around me led my buddy Craft to send it flying directl...
