Dirt Duo Considered Laughable by First Lady

Mississippi First Lady Marsha Barbour and her husband, Gov. Haley Barbour, were in Greenwood on Thursday for a class at the Viking Cooking School.

GREENWOOD -- As he made his way to the revolving door that highlights the entrance of The Alluvian Hotel in historic Downtown Greenwood, Thomas Gregory had stars in his eyes. Just on the other side of the glass circle stood Mississippi's two most notable citizens, Governor Haley Barbour and his wife, Marsha.

The First Couple was in town for the day, spending time at the Viking Cooking School, which faces the hotel from the opposite side of the street.

It was rumored that the Barbours were planning to drop by the hotel after their class to hobnob and glad-hand with the citizenry of Greenwood. But for now, they were conversing with Viking employees Bill and Jane Crump, among others on Howard Street.

Recalled Gregory, "All I wanted was to take a picture with the Governor. I thought it would be a nice addition to the plethora of pics posted on The Delta Dirt."

The Delta Dirt is Greenwood's new up-and-coming online forum for "All the Dirt That's Fit to Blog in Greenwood, Mississippi."

But as Gregory and Dirt Co-Editor, R.D. Seawright, squeezed into one slice of the revolving door pie, they noticed that the Governor was headed from the street toward them and the hotel door.

"We just kept going," stated Seawright. "We thought we were going to run into Governor Barbour as he entered the hotel, so we made a complete loop in the door to avoid him."

Now safely back inside the hotel, the duo heard an uproarious display of laughter coming from just outside the door. As he made eye-contact with the perpatrator, Gregory noticed that it was Mississippi First Lady Marsha Barbour, who had just seen the two make a complete revolution in the door, laughing at them.

Gregory recalled how he felt being the brunt of Mrs. Barbour's joke. "It was humiliating. I have never been openly laughed at by someone of such high esteem before. I wish they had at least come inside for the picture."

The Barbours instead hopped in the back seat of their awaiting Highway Patrol escort vehicle, which wisked them away with quick dispatch. And just like that, the gubernatorial couple was off to another venue, probably to make fun of another band of local bloggers.
