Nine-term Sen. Bunky Huggins (R-Greenwood) passed away today in Jackson, Miss. Senator Huggins will be missed by all.

Mississippi Sen. Robert "Bunky" Huggins was known for his command of such diverse issues as healthcare, corrections and economic development. Huggins died today at his son-in-law's home in Jackson, family members said.

Huggins, a native Greenwood, was 67 and had been battling cancer for over two years. Funeral arrangements were incomplete at the time of this post.

Huggins was serving as chairman of the Senate Corrections Committee at the time of his death and had previously served as chairman of both the appropriations and public health committees.

Huggins served in the House from 1972 to 1984. He was elected to the state Senate in 1984. He represented Senate District 14, which includes parts of Leflore, Carroll, Attala, Grenada, Montgomery and Tallahatchie counties.

Huggins was born in Carrollton on Nov. 12, 1938. A successful businessman and farmer, he attended the University of Southern Mississippi and Mississippi College.
