Lauren Newman Bone Marrow Donor Drive
GC: Bone Marrow Donors Sought for 10-Year-Old with Leukemia
CaringBridge: Lauren Newman's Journal and Guestbook

Lauren Newman (age 10) needs your help to save her life. Have your blood tested tomorrow to see if you are a bone marrow match for her.
When: Tuesday, May 2nd from 3 p.m. - 7 p.m.
Where: First Presbyterian Church Parish Building
Lauren Newman is the 10 year old daughter of Lacy and Amy Newman of Dallas. Her dad Lacy grew in Greenwood with his sisters, Becky and Gayle and their mother, Emmy Lou. Now more than ever, she needs your help.
Lauren is in her third relapse of leukemia. She's had the disease for seven years and has fought it off twice with the assistance of chemotherapy and other medical treatment. But Lauren's little body has been weakened by the chemotherapy treatments over the years. Now, only a bone marrow transplant will do.
She and many others with blood related diseases urgently need a marrow transplant. Donors will be registered in the National Marrow Donor Program for the benefit of patients worldwide in need of life-saving matches.
This drive doesn't mean you'll have to give marrow right away. At the church, you'll watch a brief video about the National Marrow Donor Program. You'll have to fill out a questionnaire. Then, if you pass the screening, a medical person will take a small vial of blood from you.
The blood will then be shipped off for testing. Those who agree to this will be placed in the national marrow databases, even if they don't match with Lauren.
If you want to be tested, please call Alan Carter at 453-8132 or Janice Ford at 453-2585 to let them know. Carter expects 150-200 people to show up at the church, and he wants to have plenty of testing supplies on hand.
The tests usually take six weeks to complete, but physicians want to expedite Lauren's marrow transplant.
Meanwhile, Lauren is back in the hospital in Dallas, suffering from infections. She's on multiple antibiotics right now. Her parents write about their daughter's medical condition on a website located here.
Requirements of a bone marrow donor: 1. Must be 18-60 years of age and in general good health and 2. Registration involves a simple blood test and inclusion in the National Marrow Donor Program.
The cost for the testing is being covered by contributors who are generously supporting this drive.
I plan on going to be tested tomorrow as I am friends with her cousin, Robbie Everest, of Salt Lake City, Utah. You have nothing to lose and you may become the miracle Lauren needs to save her life! I hope to see you there!
In addition, your tax-deductible contributions may be made to:
The Marrow Foundation
Lauren Newman Fund
400 Seventh Street, NW, Suite 206
Washington, D.C. 20004
For more information, call Alan Carter at 453-8132 or Janice Ford at 453-2585.
