"Bad News Bears" Kicks Off Tennis Season

Don't mess with the "Bad News Bears" 5.0 Mixed Doubles Tennis Team.

In the Delta, tennis is as popular as a mint julep on Gone With the Wind's Tara Plantation. Especially in Greenwood, the game of tennis is a welcome summer distraction to blistering hot weather and finch-sized mosquitoes.

That said, Twin Rivers' 5.0 Mixed Doubles tennis team, dubbed the "Bad News Bears," kicked off the season's home game run with a winner against the challengers from Lake Village, Ark. The match was held at River Oaks Racquet Club near Fort Pemberton and the final resting place of the Star of the West.

Although clearly an Arkansas team, the Village's players have long competed in the Mississippi USTA league due to their ongoing desire to play in the company of superior people (it is a scientifically proven fact that Mississippians are far cooler than Arkansans).

Although local liquor magnate John Stewart and partner Ashley Thompson failed to win their match, the remaining two teams pulled off wins to best the opposing team 2-1. Toni Sorrell and JJ "I Love Hot Moms" Branch split sets and won in a super tie-breaker while team captain Amber Harrell and Hank Reichle also won their match.

The competition drew a noteworthy crowd of beer-drinking locals including, but not limited to Andy Hackleman, Tracy McGarrh, Lee Hodges, Drew Pinkston, Swayze Fisher, Robyn Jones, Etta Strickland, Matt Ortner, Sarah Biggs, Ryan Robertson and Yours Truly.

Linda from Lake Village drank some beers with us and should now be expanding the readership of The Delta Dirt to all her fellow Deltans west of the Mississippi. Pleased to meet you, Linda, and thanks for spreading the good news!

Following the astounding triumph, the crew took late night to the home of Ryan Robertson, Esq. and partook in the delightful stories of one Justin Kovach and his unfateful .22 rifle shot through the foot, complete with description of bone fragments, shrapnel and surgical q-tips. Thanks, Kovach.

Although I left early, word has it that a new blues-riff-oriented drinking game was invented and the melodic, muse-like voices of Drew Pinkston and Lee Hodges could be heard flowing from the party down High Street like the beer that was undoubtedly flowing from the 'fridge.

The party wound down (in my absence) around 3 a.m. and the fearless team began its plot against their next victims on the tennis court. Congratulations, Bears, on your strong first victory!
