The recently disbanded 'Friends of the Shelter' group that once supported the Leflore County Humane Society is hosting a meeting at the home of Kim Brown (905 River Birch Cove in Greenwood) tonight at 5:30 p.m. All citizens interested in the well-being of homeless animals in Leflore County are encouraged to attend.

With the recent resignation of the shelter's director, Barbara Smith, the shelter shut down and severed ties with Friends. Aubrey Whittington, president of the Humane Society board, confirmed the news by saying the Friends had been "disbanded" and the Humane Society isn't connected with any volunteer organization.

Friends is an organization of people who supported the shelter by volunteering time and money to the shelter. In fact, Friends successfully raised $9,000 at a benefit Halloween party at The Alluvian and the Humane Society board was given the money to use at its discretion. Apparently is wasn't used discretely enough.

But Whittington said for 33 years the shelter operated without the assistance of an organization, implying they will still be able to operate without the formal assistance of Friends. "I believe the Friends were well-meaning but they probably had poor direction," she was quoted as saying in a recent Greenwood Commonwealth article.

That seems like a pretty bold statement coming from someone who can't keep her animal shelter open. And to top things off, the Friends raised over $9,000 for her to spend at will. $9,000! Any organization that can raise $9,000 in one night doesn't seem to be lacking in direction at all. To the contrary, it takes much planning and direction to host a profitable fundraiser in Greenwood.

Maybe the accusation was made because Friends doesn't have much formal direction - there are no officers and nobody pays dues. Instead, it is a loosely connected group of of about 30 volunteers, who take on jobs based on their areas of expertise. They are just a group of citizens who want to help the Humane Society.

So now that they have been disbanded, the group is meeting to address the situation and to decide where to go from here. Hopefully the Humane Shelter will reinstate the Friends as an auxilliary organization and allow them to continue to help the shelter that is dire need of direction.

Friends spokesperson Kim Brown can be reached at (662) 453-4392. Tonight's meeting will be held at her home located at 905 River Birch Cove, Greenwood, Miss. at 5:30 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend.
