Pageant Contestant with Greenwood Ties to Compete for the Miss Mississippi 2006 Title

Diana Strickland, sister of Greenwood resident Etta Strickland, will compete against forty-two other Mississippians for the title of Miss Mississippi 2006.

Forty-three women ages 17 to 24 arrived in Vicksburg yesterday to compete in the annual Miss Mississippi Pageant, the 48th time it's been held in the river city. Miss Leaf River Valley Diana Strickland was one of them.

Diana is the sister of Greenwood resident and Viking Range Corporation employee Etta Strickland. Diana is a twenty-one year old student at The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg and currently holds the title of Miss Leaf River Valley.

The theme for the 2006 pageant is Oz, and is a combination of the original Wizard of Oz, and Broadway musicals The Wiz and Wicked.

Activities include the annual Miss Mississippi parade today, autograph parties with the contestants throughout the week, three nights of preliminary competitions and a final round of competition on July 22, at the end of which Miss Mississippi 2005 Kristian Dambrino will crown the new Miss Mississippi.

This year will also include the Cellular South Viewer's Choice $2,500 Scholarship for Miss Mississippi Contestants. Starting yesterday, July 17 at 8:00 a.m. and ending Saturday, July 22 at 9:00 p.m., anyone can text message their vote for their favorite contestant. The winner will be announced during the live broadcast.

How to vote: Text message the number of your contestant to "MISS" (6477). For example, to vote for Diana Strickland, contestant #25, text message the number 25 to 6477. You may vote as many times as you wish, but be aware that voting is available exclusively for Cellular South customers.

The pageant will be held at the Vicksburg Convention Center and will appear locally on WABG on Saturday, July 22, 2006.

Obama or McCain? You Decide.

Barack Obama is the only candidate that has been successful at reaching across party lines in the presidential election. I as well have not had much to say on The Dirt. It is unfortunate that I no longer consider myself in tune with life in the Delta and can no longer comment as such. My free time (what little of it I have) has also been dedicated to following both the presidential election and American Idol like a hawk. That having been said, I am not afraid to admit that my name is on Amy's list of previously sane people who are seriously considering Obama in November. Editorial: As Predicted, McCain Falls in the Polls

This two-minute campaign ad clearly states Barack Obama's plan to reenergize our economy. Thank God someone is addressing this issue. In an opinion editorial previously published this week, I predicted that the roller coaster ride the economy has been on this week would cause Republican presidential candidate John McCain to fall in the polls. "My prediction: By the end of the week, McCain's stance on the economy will cause his Palin bump in the polls to all but disappear."
