Turnrow Books to Open Back Porch
Tonight at Turnrow Book Co. on Howard Street in historic downtown Greenwood, four terrific writers will join in opening the bookstore's new second floor screened in porch. Starting at 5:30 p.m., Lazy Magnolia brew will be on tap and served via their new Viking kegerator. At 6:00 p.m. the following authors will do their thing:
Kevin Sessums, A-list celebrity interviewer for Vanity Fair and author of a controversial new memoir, Mississippi Sissy, in which he describes his uncommon formative years in Jackson's literary society.
David Adams Richards, one of Canada's top novelists, whose new novel, The Friends of Meager Fortune, is set in a Canadian logging village, where a prosperous family's dynasty comes crashing down.
Sonny Brewer, author of A Sound Like Thunder and The Poet of Tolstoy Park, returns to preview his new book, Cormac, which tells the incredible exploits of his kidnapped dog.
Steve Yarbrough, an Indianola native who writes some of the best fiction about the modern-day Delta. His most recent novel, The End of California, is still a hit at Turnrow and around the Delta.
The brick wall features a metal car hood sculpture similar to the one that flanks the wall when you walk in the front door. Only this one was created by Kelly Kornegay, bookstore owner, several years ago. The porch also features wooden shades, a comfortable couch and chairs, an array of potted plants and several ceiling fans.
About the porch, owner Jamie Kornegay offered, "It will be a great place to come hang out and read or study. With the weather so nice in Greenwood right now, there is really no better place to be than on the porch at the Delta's independent bookstore."
I agree. The porch is great for the weather this time of year and promises to be a new favorite of mine for random lazy Saturday afternoons. If you can't make the grand opening tonight, I strongly suggest you stop by soon to peruse the pages of a good book and enjoy a cup of coffee (served upstairs - just off the porch).
