Jack Pendarvis to Read at Turnrow on Thursday

Jack Pendarvis will read from his latest collection of short stories this Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Turnrow Book Co. in downtown Greenwood.
Jack Pendarvis, author of The Mysterious Secret of the Valuable Treasure, will read from his new collection of short stories this Thursday afternoon. Entitled Your Body is Changing, Pendarvis' latest collection blends satire and comedy into the perfect set of Southern stories.
From Publisher's Weekly:
"Pendarvis's second book sends up the mundane and extraordinary circumstances inflicted upon and by his misfit Southern eccentrics. His characters are quirky and grotesque, infuriating and hilarious, and his stories' unexpected twists are both impressive and thought provoking."
Jaime Kornegay, co-owner of Turnrow Book Co., encourages the entire Greenwood community to come out and experience what he promises to be a comical evening. "This is sure to be one of the funniest readings you'll ever hear," Kornegay assured.
"Pendarvis is a master at drawing up great windbag characters and letting them chatter away in absurd confrontations. Though wickedly hilarious, Pendarvis is a good Alabama boy at heart, and this is edgy satire with a soft middle," Kornegay said. "To get the full impact of his work, you should hear him read in person, which is an experience in itself. If you enjoyed Confederacy of Dunces, you'll want to hear this."
Jack will be joined by New Orleans writer Pia Z. Ehrhardt, who visits with her debut, Famous Fathers and Other Stories. These are stories of long-distance families, checkered pasts, marital affairs, and strange bedfellows, but like so many contemporary stories in this vein, these are not depressing.
Kornegay offered, "Ehrhardt’s characters are lonely without being desperate, and more bemused than angry. There is an effort to see the light and recognize that even in times of trouble, life is a wonder. This is a strong, shimmering and slim little collection that may catch you by surprise."
The reception with Pendarvis and Ehrhardt begins at 5:30 p.m. with readings to follow. All featured selections are available for purchase at Turnrow Book Co. To reserve signed copies or for general inquiries, please call (662) 453-5995 or visit www.turnrowbooks.com.
