Stars and Stripes at Whittington Park Tonight

The West Singers will kick things off at Stars and Stripes in the Park tonight at Whittington Park. A Fourth of July fireworks display will begin at sundown.

Looking for some fun and fireworks for the Fourth of July? Look no further than Greenwood's own Whittington Park.

Tonight will once again showcase the best of fireworks and local music at Stars and Stripes in the Park. The community event is sponsored annually by the Greenwood-Leflore County Chamber of Commerce.

The park will open at 5 p.m. and everyone is encouraged to come with their family and friends, and bring chairs, blankets and a picnic. The celebration is free and open to the public, and it is a non-alcoholic event.

At 5:15 p.m. there will be a children's parade led by Greenwood Mayor Sheriel Perkins, who will be riding the Cannon Motor Co.'s antique fire truck. Children who wish to walk in the parade should meet at the Greenwood Youth Center at 5 p.m., and all participants are encouraged to wear their red, white and blue.

After the children's parade Mayor Perkins will give a welcome speech, followed by a presentation by the Honor Guard, an Invocation, the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of the National Anthem.

The entertainment will begin at 6 p.m. with a performance by the West Singers, and then Under the Gun will perform at 7 p.m.

Concessions will be available throughout the event, and various vendors will be serving everything from hamburgers to snow cones. Additionally, Girl Scout Troop 57 will be hosting the "Children's Corner," which will have free activities, games and prizes for kids, including an area with inflatable jumpers.

The fireworks display will take place after dark and it will be the grand finale of the festival. Stars and Stripes in the Park is an event the whole community will enjoy and organizers are encouraging everyone to come on out and join the fun.
