Turnrow to Host Martin and Chandler This Week

Man Martin poses with Man's Best Friend. He will sign copies of his new novel, Days of the Endless Corvette, this afternoon at Turnrow.

Beginning this afternoon at 5:30 p.m., Turnrow Book Co. will start their weekend of book signings and readings at their store on Howard Street.

Southern novelist Man Martin will appear at Turnrow to sign and read from his debut novel, Days of the Endless Corvette. This novel is set in a fictional Georgia county that brings to mind a Southern version of Garrison Keillor's Lake Woebegon.

The lovable misfit at the center of the novel is a dropout mechanic who loses his sweetheart and undertakes the improbable task of building a complete car out of leftover parts from a classic '53 Corvette.

The novel is winning raves from fellow writers like Mark Childress, Joshilyn Jackson and Sonny Brewer, who said the book contains "enough comedy, pathos, tenderness, excitement and pure d magic...to build half a dozen lesser novels."

Then on Saturday, July 14 at 2 p.m., Turnrow will be hosting a book signing with Jennifer Chandler and photographer Langdon Clay. Chandler, who once headed one of Memphis' most renowned restaurants, Cheffie's Market and More, is the author of Simply Salads, an excellent new cookbook that serves up 100 creative variations on the salad.

In addition, she will be leading a salad class at the Viking Cooking School Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. If you'd like to sign up for the class, please call the Viking Cooking School at 662-451-6750.

For more information on either of the signings, contact Turnrow at 662-453-5995 or visit www.turnrowbooks.com.

Editor's note: The good folks at Turnrow Books contributed to this report.

"Chandler, who heads one of Memphis' most renowned new restaurants, Cheffie's Market and More . . ."

In the interest of accuracy, I must point out that Cheffie's Market and More in Memphis opened in 1999 and closed three years later.
