Yes to the No-smoking Ban
The smoking ban is good for the citizens of Greenwood and those that patronize its public places. As Amy revealed, cigarette smoke kills people. But it not only kills the person smoking the cigarette, it also kills those who breathe the smoke second-hand.
Now I know that I am not telling anybody anything new here. I just think that it is negligent to defend someone's right to breathe dirty air over someone else's right to live. And just because a person wants to live longer, it shouldn't keep them from enjoying a nice meal out on the town. Priority should be given to the majority.
I realize that no one forces Smoking Ban Advocates to patronize smoking establishments. The issue isn't about force or the lack thereof. It is about the right to breathe clean, non-toxic air no matter where you choose to go. Whether it be the post office, the drugstore, or the local hang-out spot, everyone deserves the right to enjoy a healthy environment in public places.
Also, it should be noted that many of the people who complain about indoor smoking aren't doing so because they lost a relative to lung cancer. Most of those in favor of the ban are making a personal decision based on their health concerns. It's one thing to choose to smoke in your own home; it's entirely different to smoke around others who can't protect themselves from the by-product.
As for high fructose corn syrup: my consumption of the stuff doesn't harm anyone else's health. Whether I choose to go HFCS-free or not doesn't affect the person sitting next to me. And that is what this issue is about. It's about the person sitting next to me and their right to live.
Basically, it's the principle of the thing.
