Poll: Greenwood Still Split on Smoking Ban

Greenwood is still evenly split in the debate of the smoking ban, which was unanimously voted into law by the Greenwood City Council on Tuesday, July 17, 2007. In The Delta Dirt's latest online poll, the question was asked, "How will the smoking ban affect your patronage of Greenwood restaurants and bars?"

A total of 140 votes were cast: 19 (14%) said they would go out more, 13 (9%) said they would go out less, 59 (42%) said they would stop going out, and 49 (35%) said that it wouldn't affect them. If you combine the pro-ban responses (more and not affect) and compare them to the anti-ban responses (less and stop) you get a 49% vs. 51% split, barely leaning in opposition to the ban.

This just goes to show that Greenwood citizens are still very evenly split over the ban. When it goes into effect tomorrow, time will begin to tell. Will people really stop patronizing local restaurants because they will have to step outside to smoke? I think a few will.

But in the long-run, my hope is that those in favor of the ban will eat out more often and offset the difference. In time, I think this will be just a small speedbump on the road to progress in Greenwood.
