Vote 'No' Tomorrow to the Tourism Tax Referendum

Go Vote Tomorrow in County and Statewide General Elections!

A special referendum will appear on tomorrow's ballot to levy an additional 1% tourism tax on Leflore County hotels and restaurants.

We already collect a 1% tax on hotels and restaurants that goes to the Greenwood Convention and Visitors Bureau. (In other words, you pay 8% sales tax, not 7, when you dine out in the 'Wood.) But this a good thing.

However, the Board of Supervisors now wants to add ANOTHER 1% to hotels and restaurants to collect for the Leflore County Civic Center, which does not operate in the black, AND "other projects."

What does this mean? Yes, you guessed it. SLUSH FUND. This convenient clause will allow President Robert Moore and the rest of the Board of Supervisors to collect approximately $350,000 a year for their own pet projects. Do not give them un-earmarked money.

Moore argues that collecting this tax from tourists keeps YOU from having to pay it, since Civic Center repairs would then not have to be taken from your county property taxes. But, last time you checked, you probably noticed that YOU also ate out at Greenwood restaurants.

I second Amy's remarks. The additional tax will be used by the Board of Supervisors for Godknowswhat. If the language of the referendum spelled out more specifically how the money would be spent, I might not be as opposed to the idea. But using the term "other projects" reeks of governmental tax abuse. If you have any sense at all, vote "NO" on the referendum and end the corruption that is our Board of Supervisors.
