Poll: John McCain a Delta Dirt Favorite
The readership of The Delta Dirt is largely Republican, with John McCain garnering the most votes in our recent non-scientific poll. The question was, "If all were an option in November, who would you vote for in the presidential election?" McCain received 43 of the 101 votes case, or 42% of the poll vote. Democrat Barack Obama came in a close second with 31%, or 32 votes.
Hillary Clinton, not a favorite in the Magnolia State, did not fare so well among Dirt subscribers. Clinton, who was recently caught debasing Mississippi while campaigning in Iowa, only received 10 votes, or 9% of those cast. Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee received 16 votes, or just 15% of those cast.
This split among Dirt readers is fairly accurate with respect to how Mississippians voted in the primary. With McCain having already sealed his nomination, Mississippi democrats came out in record numbers to voice their support for Obama. In the statewide primary election, Obama received 61% of the vote, picking up an estimated 17 delegates, to Clinton's 11.
While it is not certain who will eventually win the democratic nomination, it has been discussed that if it were to be Barack Obama, Mississippi could potentially go blue in the general presidential election, a feat that hasn't happened anytime in recent history. It is still way to early to talk about the general election. With Mississippi out of the way, all eyes are now on Pennsylvania.
