Family, Fire, and the Final Four
A Franklin Street bonfire signals the victory of UNC over Duke on March 8, 2008.
For the first time since the Christmas holidays, I get to see my family this weekend. That is unless you count spring break in Winter Park with Malone. Anyway, I am sitting at home waiting for my mom and sister to arrive and hoping that their plane lands without sliding off the runway in this awful rainy weather.
Despite the weather, this is a good weekend for them to visit. As you may know, the Carolina Tar Heels made it to the the Final Four and are set to play Kansas on Saturday. Going to undergrad in the SEC and growing up a fan of college football, it has been a strange transition for me to become a fan of ACC basketball.
But the Heels make it easy. Not only are they consistently at the top of the rankings each year, the fans are crazy for basketball like the SEC is for football. Roy Williams is nothing short of a god on this campus and Coach K (of Duke infamy) is thought to run in similar circles with Satan and Mussolini.
On nights of big basketball wins, all the Carolina fans rush to the corner of Franklin and Cameron Streets and build bonfires out of anything nearby that burns. Newspaper, clothing, furniture, anything flammable. I have seen this celebration only once - the night that UNC beat Dook.
But I am hopeful that we will get another chance to witness this spectacle on Saturday. And hopefully again on Monday...
