What's Great About Greenwood: Waffle House

Get excited: 24 hours a day of tasty breakfast goodness will soon be yours!

Okay, okay. I know. It hasn't actually happened yet, but rumor has it that Waffle House is about to make landfall on Highway 82 in Greenwood.

Now, normally I don't get too excited about chain restaurants. Under normal circumstances, I would argue that the one thing we don't need is another Mickey D's, Krystal Burger, Captain D's, etc. in a town that is already littered with generic, pre-fab, obesity-inspiring dining options. But we are, after all, talking about Waffle House, people.

The fact is that I have all but given up hope for quality development on the Highway 82 corridor. It seems like every day there is yet another tin-walled shed being built on 82 to house the next Advance Auto Parts or Cellular South operation. As a matter of fact, I still can't figure out why Cell South abandoned their perfectly good real estate by Scott's carnival gas station in favor of their new barn across from Wal-Mart. But I digress.

Highway 82 as we know it is and will always be the home of the chain retail store and restaurant. It is an optimal location for business models who prey on passers-through. And with Highway 82 being the major east-west corridor in central Mississippi, this will be a perfect location for a Waffle House. If you want locally-owned businesses and restaurants, unique character, and historic architecture, go downtown. If you want waffles, hit the bypass.

My excitement for Waffle House is driven by two things: 1. my personal affinity for waffles, and 2. the fact that they never close. Ever.

This means that any time of the day or night Greenwood residents will be able to eat a made-to-order waffle, along with hashbrowns that are scattered, smothered, covered, chunked, topped, diced, and/or peppered. Being run out of Webster's but don't want to go home? Waffle House to the rescue! Plus, it will be located much closer to home than Krystal, which will help some of you keep those pesky DUIs at bay.

Regardless, any kind of new development in Greenwood is good, whether their building will be of any quality or not. Greenwood needs jobs, and as reported by the Greenwood Commonwealth, the opening of the new Waffle House will create approximately 20 new jobs. Construction should start in September and will be complete by December 2008. This will be just in time for my return visit for Christmas vacation. Coincidence? I think not!

So, if you are like me and love a waffle any hour of the day, this will be another example of something that is great about Greenwood!
