New Look. New Tagline. New Focus.
As you should be able to discern, The Delta Dirt has an entirely new look. Gone are the archaic brown blocks of yore with simple lettering. Gone is the familiar tagline plagiarized from the pages of the New York Times. Gone are the days of struggling to be your one-stop-shop for social information and juicy gossip.
A new day has arrived in the Mississippi Delta!
With readership waning and the co-editors of this fine publication constantly under pressure to provide the "lowdown about town," we have decided to take a more journalistic approach to the internet phenomenon that is The Delta Dirt. That means you will start to see a few changes around here.
First, we are going to let the good folks at the Greenwood Commonwealth keep their jobs. They already do a fine enough job keeping you up-to-date on the latest newsworthy items in our fair city. There is no need for us to compete with that. I know Tim Kalich just breathed a big sigh of relief.
Second, our posts will be less newsy-ish, and more editorial-ish. We intend to continue coverage of local, state, and national issues. Only now will we be focusing our efforts on our opinion of the respective matters instead of the actual factual information that can be found from any news media.
Third, you just may start to see some creative writing return to The Dirt. Many moons ago I tried my hand at writing funny stories that happened in and around the Delta. Try if you can to remember the legend of the Black Bullet, the saga that was Pearl River Resort, and other tales from the flatland. Now envision more of the same.
Fourth, you will probably see me continue to write about local issues from a planning perspective. It finally dawned on me that I am getting a two-year professional degree in the field of planning and I might as well put my vast amount of wisdom (sarcasm intended) to good use. Race relations, historic preservation, community and economic development are all fair game.
Fifth, postings may become more sporadic. From now on, our mantra will be quality over quantity. No more checking every five minutes for the latest updates. You can read them when we post them. And we will write them when we feel inspired. After all, the good stuff takes divine inspiration.
Yes, we will probably still post the "What's Good in the 'Wood" feature that has been a mainstay since this blog's inception. And we will definitely still let you know when especially cool events come your way. Just don't expect the exact same story that the Commonwealth is reporting.
After much debate and deliberation, we think this is the best direction we can take things from here. It may not be the same ol' Dirt that you are used to, but I assure you that The Delta Dirt 3.0 will be new and improved!
Thanks for reading and let us know what you think...
