Smoke Out

Image
(Top) Master carpenter and rabid Bulldog fan Andy Hunt (left) and one of Greenwood's favorite bartenders, Mike Ewing, enjoyed one last night to smoke indoors at Webster's Food & Drink Wednesday. When asked by a reporter what he thought about the smoking ban, Ewing said, "I think it's bullshit!" which unfortunately could not be printed in The Greenwood Commonwealth. (Below) Greenwood Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Paige Hunt (left) and Fellow Flatlander and WABG TV personality Christen Jackson also attended Webster's Smoke 'Em if You Got 'Em Party. Regarding Thomas's post on the recent smoking poll, I argue that those who voted "no affect" can not necessarily be categorized as ban advocates. I, for one, will not lessen my trips to bar but definitely do not favor the no-smoking ordinance which became effective today. Regardless, I hope the poll was a little off. Hopefully a significant number of Greenwoodians will not stop freq...

Smoke 'Em If You Got 'Em Party Tonight at Webster's

Image
A dirty Webster's ashtray holds ashes, cigarette butts, and good fortune. This image will become a thing of the past tomorrow, when the smoking ordinance goes into effect at all public places in the City of Greenwood. Webster's Food and Drink is proudly hosting their "Smoke 'Em If You Got 'Em Party" tonight in honor of the Greenwood Smoking Ban, which goes into effect tomorrow. Anyone can attend this, the last chance to legally smoke inside Greenwood's favorite former smoker's haven. In celebration of the occasion, the Smoke Eater is receiving the Webster's Medal of Honor for its meritorious service over the last few years. If you are a bonafide chain smoker or secondhand smoke fiend and want to get one last round of kicks at the local bar, you won't want to miss this last-in-a-lifetime opportunity! Baby back ribs will be served as a special for tonight and Back 40's Jason Ballard will be playing his country tunes for the occasion. For ...

MSU Celebrates 129 Years at Webster's

Image
Want an excuse to get together with your friends at the local watering hole on a Wednesday afternoon? Come celebrate the 129th Anniversary of Mississippi State University at Webster's tomorrow, February 28th, at 7:00 p.m. In conjunction with the MSU Alumni Association, the Leflore-Carroll alumni chapter will provide appetizers, drinks as well as a birthday cake for all Bulldogs who come by to celebrate. A fine selection of domestic and imported bottled beers as well as the full lineup of Lazy Magnolia on tap will be available for purchase at the bar. Also, MSU plays Arkansas in basketball on TV tomorrow night so this will be a good opportunity for all area Bulldogs to get together to socialize, watch the game and celebrate MSU’s 129th birthday. This is a very informal gathering with no speakers from the university, so please feel free to bring the whole family. And if you are a Bulldog (or just a Bulldog fan), remember to wear maroon and white tomorrow to celebrate the birth of...

Mississippi's 'Lazy Magnolia' Now on Tap in Town

Image
Lazy Magnolia Brewing Company website Lazy Magnolia is Mississippi's first full-service brewery offering offsite sales since the days prohibition. Mississippi's first and only brewery, Lazy Magnolia, located in Brett Favre's hometown of Kiln in South Mississippi, is coming to Kent Hull's hometown of Greenwood in the Mississippi Delta this Thursday. The Town of Kiln is the location of what was once considered the bootleg capital of Mississippi. The Town's popularity for bootlegging can be attributed to excellent spring water and rural seclusion on the banks of the Jourdan River. Since my family has a camp (at least we did before Katrina) on the Jourdan River, I can personally attest to its peaceful and serene environment. In fact, my fondest childhood memories harken back to the days of Fortenberry-Smith family reunions on the banks of "the River" just outside of Kiln. But I digress... As a result of a recent partnership with Marascalco Distributing of Gree...

Riverfront Liquors Under New Ownership

Image
Riverfront Liquors on Claiborne Avenue is now under the ownership of Greenwood's own man-about-town, John Stewart. Everyone's favorite hometown liquor store, Riverfront Liquors, reopened today under new ownership. John Stewart, partner in Webster's Food and Drink, finalized the paperwork for the transfer this morning. "I am excited about the possibilities we have with Riverfront Liquors" he stated. Over the past few months, the stock of wines and liquors had depleted under the previous owner. With new ownership and a new sense of pride comes the opportunity to return Riverfront to its glory days of old. Stewart noted that his first order of business will be to "dress the place up a little" so that the store feels more inviting. A fresh coat of paint and a window display may be just the ticket for giving the place some much-needed curb appeal. The main improvement, however, will the the noticeable increase in the amount of product in stock. A large ...

Webster's Picks-up Partner, Sponsors Team

Image
UV Blue Vodka - The Drink of Choice for Tennis Champions Everywhere. With the recent bombshell announcement of John Stewart's partnership with the current Webster's Bar & Grill owners came an unexpected press release from the Greenwood Country Club Men's 3.0 Tennis Team. In a prepared statement, the team revealed that Webster's will not only become their "unofficially official" sponsor for the upcoming season, but the restaurant will also begin carrying the team's trademark celebratory shot, Blue Vodka. The local nightspot has also agreed to rename the shooter 'Bring It' Blue Vodka as a tribute to the infamous 'Bring It Boys' of 3.0 tennis fame. When asked his opinion on the matter, the new co-owner had little to say. He only alluded to his past relationship with the beverage of choice as a complementary one. Others on the team made similar comments in reference to their beloved Blue Vodka. Stewart, the team's only left-handed pl...
