Mississippi's 'Lazy Magnolia' Now on Tap in Town

Lazy Magnolia Brewing Company website

Lazy Magnolia is Mississippi's first full-service brewery offering offsite sales since the days prohibition.

Mississippi's first and only brewery, Lazy Magnolia, located in Brett Favre's hometown of Kiln in South Mississippi, is coming to Kent Hull's hometown of Greenwood in the Mississippi Delta this Thursday.

The Town of Kiln is the location of what was once considered the bootleg capital of Mississippi. The Town's popularity for bootlegging can be attributed to excellent spring water and rural seclusion on the banks of the Jourdan River.

Since my family has a camp (at least we did before Katrina) on the Jourdan River, I can personally attest to its peaceful and serene environment. In fact, my fondest childhood memories harken back to the days of Fortenberry-Smith family reunions on the banks of "the River" just outside of Kiln. But I digress...

As a result of a recent partnership with Marascalco Distributing of Greenwood, Lazy Magnolia will be featured first at Webster's Food and Drink and soon after at Flatland Grill and Giardina's Bar in historic downtown Greenwood.

In celebration of the arrival, the owners of Webster's are planning a celebratory ribbon-cutting ceremony of sorts.

Instead of local government officials and Chamber of Commerce members in attendance, however, local barflies will highlight the guestlist and will reap the benefits of the celebration. Similarly, pint glasses will replace giant, oversized ceremonial scissors as the apparatus of choice for the event.

Starting at 7 p.m., souvenir Lazy Magnolia beer mugs will be sold on a first-come, first-serve basis for $10. This investment will entitle the purchaser to $1 refills of any Lazy Magnolia brew throughout the night.

John Stewart, partner in Webster's, was not shy about his feelings toward the new menu addition. "We are overflowing with excitement in welcoming Lazy Magnolia to the Webster's draft assortment. It is always a pleasure to offer a fine Mississippi product to our customers and Lazy Magnolia's unique flavor is sure to please our patrons."

For your next get-together, make sure to pick up you favorite flavor Party Pig.

Outside the bar, Party Pigs are available for consumer purchase. These portable, self-compressing party-balls of delicious Lazy Magnolia beer contain the equivalent of a case of bottled booze. The Pigs will soon be available for purchase at Delta Fresh Market and Greenwood Market Place and will be expanding to other area vendors in the near future.

In a recent interview with Lazy Magnolia brewmasters Leslie and Mark Henderson, I uncovered the story behind the Lazy Magnolia name.

Almost six years ago, Leslie bought her husband Mark and beer kit as a gift. Once he had brewed the first batch of barley pops, he decided to move the operation from the kitchen to the back porch.

"Just outside the back porch of our house is a group of magnolia trees that barely survive from year to year due to the area's sandy soil," recalled the Hendersons. "Since they always bloom late in the year, we called them 'lazy magnolias.'"

So when the Hendersons were deciding on a name for their homebrewed ale, they didn't have to look any farther than their back yard for their inspiration.

As a native Mississippian and beer aficianado, Leslie understands the beer tastes of the South; as a chemical engineer, she knows the processes by which to make the delicious refreshments. With four permanent flavors and several seasonals, Lazy Magnolia has something for every discerning palate.

During the interview, I had the rare opportunity to taste each Lazy Magnolia beer with the instruction of the brewster (female brewmaster) at hand. Following are descriptions of each flavor and my semi-professional assessment (as a college graduate and fraternity initiate, I know a thing or two about beer):

Southern Pecan is the original pecan brown ale, made with locally grown and roasted pecans. This personal favorite tastes like pralines in a glass and is reminiscent of the flavorings in Texas' Shiner Bock.

Amberjaque is their amber rye ale. Although it is a little hoppier than Southern Pecan, the rye used in this brew give it a distinctive, clean and crisp flavor. Think pale ale, matey.

Blue Heron is the sparkling wheat beer in the lineup. The yeast used to make this beer impart fuit flavors that give it its distinctive taste. Although comparable to Blue Moon, this beer is filtered and offers more distinctive spice and fruit flavors.

Par 3 is the brewery's three grain summer wheat beer. The name implies its three grain recipe and its first serving location: a golf course. Lighter in calories, this clean flavored brew is perfect year round.

In response to their association with Lazy Magnolia, JJ Branch of Marascalco Distributing remarked, "I'm really excited about our partnership with Lazy Magnolia Brewing Company. Finally Mississippi has a beer that we can call our own."

Branch also offered his opinion on Thursday night's welcome ceremony. "I think 'Pint Night' will be a great introduction for the Delta's soon to be favorite beer."
